Sea Lions and Manatees did a deep-dive on the "Mona Lisa of the North" as we learned about Johannes Vermeer and incorporated line and pattern play into a collaborative project.
"A Girl with a Pearl Earring" is likely his most famous "tronie" and represents a powerful example of genre studies of the northern Baroque period.
Vermeer was a contemporary of Rembrandt. We talked about the differences between the two master painters. Vermeer has only 35 (tiny) paintings still in existence today, whereas Rembrandt has hundreds, and his paintings are huge in scale.
Lastly, Vermeer adopted technology in the 1600s by using a camera obscura to help his drawings. This facilitated a good conversation about how to be smart when drawing is difficult. Was he cheating? Or was he using his brain + technology to his advantage?
Sea Lions and Manatees did a great job on this collaborative project.
This patchwork collaboration will continue to be developed as an early-finishers project. This project represented line and pattern-play; it helped students get back into the rhythm of rules and expectations inside the art classroom.
K-5th are still in the middle of our "Cat Party" project. Check out my demonstration here and this dance party video that accompanied our studio days. Students are learning to manipulate charcoal, white chalk, and soft color pastels. We will add an explosion of colorful accessories in the coming days...
Sea Lions and Manatees are learning to "see" and simplify forms of light and shadow. "Draw what you see and not what you think you see." It's a complete brain-rewiring! These kids are getting a taste of observational drawing techniques as they practice gesture, quick-sketch, and blind-contour drawings.
I am so proud of all my amazing students, but I want to celebrate when I see kids go above and beyond my expectations. For August, I am granting this award to Thomas.
I have observed Thomas working consistently and diligently in the art classroom. I've seen him try his best even when the task is challenging. Thomas chose to stay after class (missing recess) to work on his cat drawing and took his time to edit and refine it. His work has been excellent this month and I am so very proud of him. He will be receiving a (tiny) Artist of the Month Trophy and a (huge) Pencil prize. Keep up the good work!
There are no uploads to Artsonia yet, as I've spent the month ironing out all the rules and procedures and getting settled in our new cottage classroom. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our first POPS Art Night on September 7th. Please RSVP (or email me) to let me know if you are attending. I can't wait to see you!
